Spurs fans love to whine and cry
In a blog post titled “Can the Spurs Win with Matt Bonner?,” the author summarizes Bonner’s strengths (shooting, hustle, strong +/- and average boarding ability) and his weaknesses (defense, sometimes streaky) and concludes the Spurs can win with Bonner.
What a revelation! The Spurs HAVE been winning with Matt Bonner and the other guys who make up the entire team. The author also suggests fans who think they can’t win with Matt Bonner are lamenting the shallow depth at the big man spots and not necessarily Bonner’s skills exclusively.
I mean, how much more do you want from the guy who’s near the top of the three-point shooting leaders in the league, puts in solid minutes and scores in bunches while spreading the floor for Manu, Parker and Duncan?
Posts questioning whether or not one person can make or break a difference on the Spurs is ridiculous, but not as ridiculous as some of the comments readers followed-up with.
For example:
We need to trade Ian Mahinmi, Fab, and a first round pick for Chris Bosh.
We need a definitive presence that can play both sides of the ball at center. This is becoming a serious problem with LA.
Andrew Bynum, Gasol, and Odom. We need someone to backup Duncan. You can’t have Kurt Thomas and Matt Bonner suddenly combine their talents, and physically it would look very strange.
A follow-up commenter sarcastically wrote the Spurs should trade for all the Easter All Stars.
Or another:
Thanks for this discussion, to my knowledge not available anywhere else. In my mind bonner’s not the problem. Its the dissapearance of even minimal contributions from Kurt, Fab, udoka and Bowen. Thanks again.
Spurs fans won’t see where the crying and whining here is, but leading the Southwest division with 31 wins is pretty freaking good. There is no “problem” at all, even with minimal contributions from the last four guys on the bench.
The Spurs are paying Matt Bonner $3 million this season to be a consistent starter and the 4th option for scoring on the floor although he sometimes provides more than what is expected of him.
