Off the bench, Bonner still performs like a starter

February 1st, 2009

Bonner takes a chargeThe Spurs played the New Orleans Hornets last night and despite Chris Paul playing on his head, they still squeaked out a win.

Kurt Thomas was inserted into the starting lineup last night in favour of Bonner but Matt still took the bulk of centre minutes logging 27 and shooting 5 of 6 from the field including 3 of 3 from three point land.

Bonner’s 13 points and three rebounds seem unremarkable compared to the 25, 22 and 20 by Parker, Ginobli and Finley respectively but still helped put them past the dangerous Hornets.

Matt didn’t get as much ink because of his teammate’s stellar play but he did get a few mentions.

From Rotoworld:

Kurt Thomas started at center for the Spurs on Saturday, going scoreless with two rebounds in 17 minutes.

Not a very impressive game for Thomas, but he wasn’t inserted into the starting five for his offensive prowess. Matt Bonner slid to the bench where he had 13 points, three 3-pointers, three rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes.
A reader made the following comment on NOLA.com:
West frustrates the hell outta me on defense. He’s always late, very slow, and can’t guard anybody, always goes for fakes. I mean he could not sstay with Bonner which hurt because unlike the game in NO where Bonner missed all his wide open 3s, he made them yesterday. They need to get quicket at that spot. He’s not going to cut it.
And from My Santanonio about Manu’s jam:
So, too, was Ginobili for a pivotal stretch of the third quarter, capped by the highlight-reel play of the night. Coming hard off a screen, Ginobili took a handoff from Matt Bonner and finished a thunderous jam over Hilton Armstrong, drawing a foul before completing the 3-point play.
That’s an assist, baby! Plus, Jeff McDonald delivers a great post game story as always.
